  1. Joint Staff Officer Update MAJ Bill Coryell, Mr. John Stone, Dr. Linda Fenty

  2. Chairman’s Vision for Joint Officer Development (JOD) “..The CJCS vision for JOD entails a competency-based lifelong curriculum of learning where the outcome is a fully qualified and inherently joint officer suitable for joint command and staff responsibilities.” CJCS Vision, Nov. 2005

  3. Joint Learning Continuum How will the CJCS vision for JOD produce the largest possible body of fully qualified and inherently joint officers? Through the 4 pillars of the Joint Learning Continuum: Experience Self Development Individual Training Education

  4. “Inherent in the Joint Learning Continuum is the provision for multiple paths to JOD’s desired objective, which is an approach that enables individual learning and discards the linear, episodic, and fixed format of the current approach.” CJCS Vision for Joint Officer Development, November 2005

  5. Joint Learning Continuum This is a reiterative process--Individuals experience the elements of the continuum over and over again throughout their careers to become mission ready at each way point. The information content or level of application required at each waypoint is different—it may be new information, or may be higher level of application requiring new skills. Each Joint Officer’s path can be unique—individualized based on career choices and experiences. Career Timeline

  6. JSO Study • Identified gaps in available training and preparation of newly assigned JSOs at combatant commands • Final report reviewed and signed off by the Combatant Commands and Joint Staff Directorates; report finalized by JS J-7 August 2009 • Initial Training Aids developed—Joint Officer Handbooks and Smartcards • Alpha Test at NORTHCOM--completed • Beta Tests to begin 1 September in 10 Combatant Commands and the National Guard Bureau • Identified 15 JSO competencies that serve as a baseline for further Individual Joint Training initiatives
