  3. 7.6.4 the conflict and cooperation between the Papacy and European monarchs (e.g., Charlemagne, Gregory VII, Emperor Henry IV) • Charlemagne is Christian leader; helps Pope Leo, gets made emperor • Only Pope can crown emperors • Pope Gregory VII declares he is the boss • Only he can pick bishops, and kick out emperors • Henry feels attacked, declares a feud • Gregory excommunicates Henry (kicked out of the church) • Henry begs forgiveness….then marches to Rome and kicks Gregory out • Concordat of Worms – compromise: Pope picks the bishops, but emperor can BRIBE them! 

  4. 7.6.6 The religious Crusades • Muslim Turks take over Jerusalem; Byzantine emperor gets scared • Pope Urban II calls for a crusade, defend Christianity. God says it’s okay to kill! • 1st Crusade = success, kick Muslims out • 2nd Crusade = failure, Muslims feel disrespected and start to fight back • 4th Crusade = a disgrace to Crusades, don’t go to the Holy Land, go to Constantinople and rob/steal/attack/fight. CHRISTIAN CITY!  • Effects: 1. European’s eyes are open to the world • 2. Begin to trade with Muslims (silk! Spices! Books!) • 3. Start to explore, great voyages • 4. Jews and Muslims are attacked  • Jews/Muslims kicked out of France and England • Inquisition starts: investigate/judge heretics (people who don’t believe in what the church does)

  5. 7.6.9 Know the history of the decline of Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula that culminated in the Reconquista and the rise of Spanish and Portuguese kingdoms.
