What is an AISI Action? • Onespecific element selected from the school development plan (theory of action, instructional goal, achievement goal) that is focussed on the system direction of personalized learning and has potential for innovation • It is a specific expression of what will be done and what will be measured
What is meant by ‘innovation’? • An innovation can be understood as an idea, a practice, strategy or artefact that has the potential for transforming teacher practice and improving student learning.
What data will be collected? • Student intellectual engagement (system measures) • Interest • Motivation • Effort • Student learning goals (school based measures) • Student perception of learning relating to strategy • Student success in selected area of learning • Development of innovation or strategy • Record of changes and development in strategy or • Record of the (changing) ways strategy or tool was used
The SMMRT principle • Specific • Manageable • Measurable • Realistic • Timely
What informs the creation of the AISI Action? Analysing data to reveal where we are now (our strengths and our needs) in order to determine where we want / need to go next
How do we create an AISI Action? • Sample school theory of action: • If teachers develop capacity in personalizing learning through assessment rich strategies requiring high levels of student agency then learning tasks will engage students in developing complex thinking skills. • Sample school instructional goal: • Staff will work with more intentional focus on formative assessment strategiesforwriting. • Sample school achievement goal: • Learner engagement and performance in critical thinking, problem solving and decision making will improve student writing skills.
Sample AISI Action • Sample AISI Action template: • PLC’s will develop innovative ways of using (name of strategy – aspect of instructional goal) in order to improve intellectual engagement and (aspect of achievement goal) for students in (selected population) • Sample school AISI action: • PLC’s will develop innovative ways of usingfeedback strategies in assessment of writing in order to improve intellectual engagement and performance in critical thinking and decision making in writing for students in grades 1-4.
How do we create an AISI Action (2)? • Sample school Theory of action: • If we devote resources and time to developing teacher capacity in working with CBE’s online learner profile application (IRIS) then teachers will gather descriptive assessment information in order to plan instruction. • Sample school instructional goal: • Teachers will use data gathered from student profiles to plan instructional design in support of the school achievement goal. • Sample school achievement goal: • Students will plan their learning and set learning goalsin order to improve an identified area of need such as critical thinking, problem solving and decision making.
Sample AISI Action (2) • Sample school AISI action: • PLC’s will develop (innovative) ways of using student profilesfor planning learning goals in order to improve intellectual engagement and problem solving (in social studies and science) for students in grades 4-8. • Sample AISI Action template: • PLC’s will develop innovative ways of using (name of strategy – aspect of instructional goal) in order to improve intellectual engagement and (aspect of achievement goal) for students in (selected population)
