Reading – Implications for College • In 2003, UCLA did NOT accept 7,755 applicants who graduated from high school with a GPA of 4.0 or higher! • Other factors for college admission: • Number of AP classes taken by the applicant • The applicant’s SAT scores • The student’s personal essay • The READING DEMANDS of each of these criteria prove that reading WELL is important. • Average weekly reading for a community college is 300-600 pages. • Competitive colleges like UT, Harvard, or Princeton require 900-1200 pages a week.

  9. Reading makes you a better… • WRITER • In The Power of Reading, Stephen Krashen states that research shows that we learn to write by reading. • National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) found the reverse to also be true: students who wrote more ended up reading better. • TEST TAKER…
