Attendance • Misconception: My child can make up all the learning missed. • While written assignments can and must be made up, learning takes place both verbally and in hands-on activities that can not always be recreated. • Misconception: My child can get homework before a trip, and we’ll schedule time during the trip to complete the assignments. • Work is not always available before an absence; the student is responsible for getting missed assignments after he/she returns. Students have 2 days to make up work for each excused day missed. • Misconception: It won’t hurt if my child returns from vacation a day or two late or leaves for vacation early. They won’t be doing anything important anyway. • Learning is significant EVERYDAY! Often times we are wrapping up units and assessments are given before breaks. Illness and doctor appointments should be the main reason why a child is absent. • Misconception: Attendance during CSAP testing is not important to our family. • When a child misses a CSAP test, he/she receives a zero score which impacts Blue Heron’s overall rating and can be significantly reduce the school score, which is directly related to our federal funding.

Writing Curriculum • Rebecca Sitton Spelling • Implement with fidelity/research-based (may look a little different) • Individualized spelling lists • Research has shown that if spelling is studied exclusively in isolation (weekly tests, memorizing lists), it is not as effective as spelling studied with a context. • Spelling worksheets for reading centers or home practice on website • 5th grade “No Excuse” words: First 150 core words from previous grades plus new core words from our weekly spelling lists • Learn about 6 Traits + 1 as we compose stories, poems, and research on both paper and computers • Craft Studies of 6 Traits + 1 • Writing Workshops- review of writing process and traits • Multiple Forms (including): journals, poetry, explanations in math and reading, observations in science, recipes, letters • Functional/Procedural Texts: instructions, brochures, how-to essays • Persuasive (including): opinion, book review, or essay • Reflection Memoirs • Handwriting on final copies: 50% cursive and 50% typed

Blue Heron Homework Philosophy • 5th graders should have 30-60 minutes of homework a night (including 30 minutes of independent reading 5 times a week) • What if students are not done in that time? • Extension/completion of classroom work • Typically there will be homework in math • Log (class work takes first priority) • Reading Log (150 min./week)
Importance ofIndependent Reading "The amount of free reading done outside of school has consistently been found to relate to growth in vocabulary, reading comprehension, verbal fluency, and general information," explains Bernice Cullinan of New York University in an article on independent reading and school achievement in 2000 (Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding 1998; Greaney 1980; Guthrie & Greaney 1991; Taylor, Frye, & Maruyama 1990). She continues by explaining that research shows the more students read outside of school, the higher they score on reading achievement and standardized assessments (Anderson, Fielding, & Wilson 1998).
Homework, cont. • Students are responsible for asking teachers about homework missed in class. • Set aside a quiet place to study at home • Our hope is that you make it a priority and make it the student’s responsibility • Planners: • Please check and initial planners every night. • Homework is not due until the next day, so they need to show you. • A tool to build study skills and independence

I Dreamed I dreamed I stood in a studio And watched two sculptors there, The clay they used was a young child's mind And they fashioned it with care. One was a teacher; The tools she used were books and music and art. One was a parent with a guiding hand And a gentle, loving heart. And when at last their work was done They were proud of what they had wrought. For the things they had worked into the child Could never be sold or bought. And each agreed she would have failed If she had worked alone, For behind the parent stood the school, And behind the teacher stood the home. -Ray A. Lingenfelter
