Social characteristics • Public education did not exist for some in the southern colonies. • New England & Mid-Atlantic: Egalitarian • The belief that all people should have equal political, economic, social, & civil rights. • South developed hierarchical structure: • Rich plantations, poor farmers, indentured servants & slaves.
Political characteristics • Democratic institutions, yet colonies were impacted by the political traditions of the Mother Country. • Magna Carta: the people through their representatives have the right: • The right to be consulted on taxes and by legal means. • Trail by jury.
VA House of Burgesses • Served as the first representative body in colonial America • given the exclusive right to initiate tax bill • Directly represent the people • Town meetings
Types of governments • Colonial Charter: an official permit granted by the king for the purpose of establishing a government. • Colonist would enjoy the rights of Englishman • Proprietary Colony: Colonies granted to a group of private owners for development. • 1st is Maryland • Joint – Stock Company: company in which a group of investors pool their wealth for a common purpose. • Royal Colony: a colony under the direct control of the king through an appointed royal governor.
Salutary Neglect • An English policy of relaxing the enforcement of regulations in its colonies in return for the colonies’ continued economic loyalty • Fostered a feeling of independence. • Colonists were loyal to the crown but believed that only their colonial assemblies had power to tax them based on the tradition of the Magna Carta.
Events of Importance • Nathaniel Bacon: landless frontiersman who led a revolt in Jamestown. • Were not being represented in the House of Burgesses. • Had to be white, male, landowner • Not exactly equal representation. • Pequot War & King Philip’s War: natives took a stand against the colonist, but were defeated when the colonist were aided by other Native Americans.
