  3. ReCAP: Physical Plant • 8.6 million books • CUL 3.8, NYPL 2.9, PUL 1.9 • 5 Modules complete • 2 planned for construction: Module 8 & 9 expected to break ground FY14, completed FY15 • CUL manages transfers with quotas • Tours conducted once or twice each year ReCAP Columbia University

Recent Projects • Orphan barcodes • Barcodes accessioned at ReCAP and no record in Voyager • 3,695 barcodes were identified with customer code EV • Obsolete customer code used for vernacular languages • Sarah Elman and Zack Lane created documentation and workflow in Fall 2010 • Approx. 3,000 now resolved thanks to GA staff at Butler and contributions of EA staff ReCAP Columbia University

Recent Projects • De-accession of DVDs • Return high-use and at-risk titles to campus • Videos will be shelved in Butler Media Center and be non-circulating • CLIO location off,bmc will be used to limit delivery only to Milstein Reserves (BMC) • Action plan created and discussed in May 2011 • Minimal staff training expected for BMC • Ensures access to viewing equipment ReCAP Columbia University

East Asian Collections at ReCAP • East Asian Library has both general and special collections at ReCAP • Circulating and non-circulating collections • Items in poor physical condition do not circulate • Mainly print collection; some archives • Lots of information and instructions can be found on the ReCAP and East Asian Library website ReCAP Columbia University

  7. What Data? • Four basic categories of data • Accessions • Requests • Delivery • Circulation • Detailed information can be found at the ReCAP Data Center website • Website now includes introductory presentations for all basic categories AND analysis ReCAP Columbia University

East Asian Accessions • Chart of East Asian accessions by fiscal year • Transfer began when ReCAP opened in 2002 • Large load-in FY03 • Steady transfers for collection growth offset and space need • Typically allotted 20-25,000 items in yearly quota • Detailed information on project may be found on East Asian/ReCAP website ReCAP Columbia University

Request • Requests begin immediately after transfer • Volume has leveled off in past three years • May be explained by charge/renewal trend • Monthly request volumes in phase with academic calendar • 50% more requests in Fall and Spring than Summer system-wide • Data for lower-use collections is noisy • Western Language more requested than Vernacualr per capita ReCAP Columbia University

Request Rate by Language • Request rate is higher for Western languages and Tibetan than CJK • Accession/Request (Request rate) • Chinese : 190,936 / 20,022 (1.65%) • Japanese : 188,916 / 21,312 (1.71%) • Korean : 53,830 / 4,536 (1.46%) • Tibetan : 3,879 / 811 (4.37%) • English : 22,447 / 8,267 (5.93%) • Everything Else : 5,137 / 1,177 (3.61%) ReCAP Columbia University

EDD Requests • In 2002 when ReCAP opened, EDD only allowed for Western Language collections because expectation of language barrier • Vernacular collections approved for EDD in May 2005 • Individual patrons can have impact on data • General trend has been downward due to purchase of e-resources ReCAP Columbia University

Circulation • Analysis of East Asian Circ Desk happening location • Used for charging EA Offsite collections; other Offsite collections are charged in Butler Circ Desk happening location • Indicates trends for overall collection use, sub-collection, patron groups and activity types • Does not include data for non-circ collections • System-wide trend for on campus collections is declining ReCAP Columbia University
