SEDM 5820 • Purpose of SEDM 5820 • Assessment of literacy skills of young, struggling readers • Evaluation of student strengths and needs • Design and provide effective and engaging instruction • Nonpurpose of SEDM 5820 • Reading instruction for students with severe needs • Reading instruction more typical of that found in the general education setting

Field Experience • Begins in weeks 3 - 5 • Ends in weeks 11 - 14 • No more than 3 hours per visit • Should largely be spent observing reading instruction and teaching small groups or 1-1, also instructing case study student • Done in a general education K, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade classroom • Includes doing a case study • Hours must be signed off by a host teacher on every visit
