THE PONY EXPRESS A Publication of the Upper Midwest Region of The Shelby American Automobile Club President’s Corner I have been doing a lot of driving for work lately, which has allowed me time to observe new model car’s safety and convenience items on my current daily driver versus cars that I have owned in the past. Most of the items are either standard, or available on all new cars being sold today. The first and most obvious, is the airbag system in the steering wheel. While I can’t  argue against the safety merits of the airbags (especially when used in conjunction with your seat belts), I think of all the cars that I have owned down through the years that did not have an airbag system. Gorgeous pieces of art, some of those wheels. My good friend, Dan Iburg, has an absolutely gorgeously restored 1952 Jaguar XK 120 roadster. It has one of the most beautiful steering wheels of all time. A four spoke (“banjo” style) wood rimmed beauty…with a large protruding egg shaped center cap cover with the outline of “Growler” layered into it. Those in the British car inner circles refer to call it “The Impaler”. I think you get the idea! Anti lock brakes are another feature that are standard on most, if not all new cars. Gone are the days when we have to “pump” our brakes to avoid skidding on ice, snow, or wet roadways. Gone also are the days we drivers learn the satisfaction of what BIR’s Gary Curtis preaches and refers to as “threshold braking”. That is the point of applying your brakes to the point just before lock up to gain maximum braking performance. Traction control…takes another “fun” aspect of driving away. Most systems work with the anti lock brake system, or cut out power to your engine. And although most systems allow the driver to turn off the traction control system, most drivers will never do so, allowing for the car to “control” itself. They will never realize the potential of the driving wheels losing traction, until it is too late. Then it will be the manufacturer’s fault. Last, but not least, Stability Control, which helps soccer moms from “hanging the tail out” on their mini vans, which is fine for them, to a point. This allows them to put a DVD into the player for the kids, or talk on the cell phone, or drink their latte’s, but by the time they are sliding into a snow bank, again it will be too late. While designed to keep the masses “safe”, the items do nothing for those of us who like to test our own skills, the average drivers can get lured into a false sense of security into believing they are better behind the wheel than they really are. If these items are so good, why is it that no major racing series do not allow these features on any competing cars? This allows the drivers to be in control, not a computer! Now that snow is finally here, find an empty parking lot somewhere and try doing some doughnuts!!! See you at the meeting! It’s PARTY Time Again Our annual Winter Party is approaching again and should be a unique and fun time. Thanks to Pam Flaten’s organizing talents we are set for: • Saturday March 24th • Ft. Snelling Officer’s Club (main floor) • Social hour: 4:00 – 5:30 pm • Dinner: 5:30 – 6:30 pm • Entertainment: 6:30 – 9:00 PM Dinner will be a buffet-style setup with a variety of choices. The complete dinner is paid for out of Club funds. Members are welcome to bring any family members along. Those wanting a drink can purchase from a cash bar. After dinner we have a blackjack company coming in to deal blackjack. There is no money involved, but rather you can win tickets which you later can put into raffle drawings for different door prizes. If you prefer not to play blackjack you will receive tickets that you can place in the drawings for the various prizes. Anyone having a desirable door prize can bring it along and add it to the pile of prizes. Dress for the evening is casual. The party will be held in the main floor ballroom at the Ft. 4. Chips in your paint? Meet The Doctor! • Having tried a number of different methods for touching up the paint chips in my cars, I have finally found a method that works well and very easy. • Remember the times of trying to fill the chip hole using a book of matches that you cut off at an angle or trying to use the brush-in bottle touch up paint? You end up with big globs of paint, or unfilled craters. Then there is the paint that does seem to fall correctly in the hole and it stands out like it was a different color. Read on and you will be introduced to a method that puts an end to all of that and in a fraction of the time. • First, you need to go to the car you are trying to touch up and find the paint code that is listed on the door jamb. There may be a color name that you are familiar with that was given on the window sticker when your car was “born”. Armed with that information, visit www.drcolorchip.com . This website will prompt you for the color code, year, model and color. They will custom mix a touch up paint to match your car. You can buy a kit that comes with brushed, cleaning cloth, special polish, a brush and rubber gloves. • There are videos on site for you to get detailed information, but here is the easy process. • Make sure the surface is clean and the spots to be touched up have had wax and dirt removed. • Open the bottle of paint. Use the brush in the cap, or the special touch up brush to help fill the chip with paint. With your gloved hand, quickly rub your finger over the surface and smear the paint blob to level things out. Don’t worry about how neat or messy it is, just smear it out. Next you let it dry for a bit. • Next, use the special polish compound, and apply it to a patch of t-shirt material. This fabric is backed up by a flat plastic card about the size of a credit card. Rub over the smeared spots and it will blend in the touch up very quickly. • You’re done with everything but the admiring. • Cleaning up the engine • Ever want to try cleaning the oil, dirt and gunk off the engine for a car show, for selling your car or just keeping up with that obsessive-compulsive driver (OCD) in your car club? Here is what I have found to be the easiest way of cleaning the engine and making it look showroom new. This will not help if paint is peeling or stuff is rusty and pitted. That will require restoration. The other caution is if you have aluminum or polished surfaces, it could cause some hazing or etching. • You need two products, Castrol Super Clean in the purple spray bottle and Meguire’s Rubber and Vinyl cleaner, a toothbrush and general scrub brush. Start by warming up the engine, not hot, just warm. This softens the goo and makes the cleaner work better. You can protect sensitive areas like distributors or wiring blocks that could cause some short circuits if stuff gets wet. Aluminum foil works well for this as it can be wrapped and tucked into place. Try to keep the overspray off painted surfaces on fenders hood etc, but I have not found it to be a problem. • Now spray down the engine, metal, plastics etc with the Super Clean. Try not to breathe a lot of this stuff as you will find it irritating. If needed, agitate the thick gunk with a brush. Do not let the cleaner dry, and wash it off with a good running flush of water. Quickly pull off the aluminum foil protection and start the engine. Now let the engine heat up and aid in drying. An air hose or leaf blower can also be used to blow off the water that is in different nooks and crannies. • Next comes the magic part of the process. With the engine clean, warm and dry mist on the Vinyl and Rubber cleaner over the plastic and rubber parts, wiring harnesses etc. Close the hood and let the heat and product work. • Next time you open the hood, you will see that the whole thing looks almost like brand new, and like it had been detailed by a pro. You should be able to do this in less than 30 minutes. The next time you will find it is easier each subsequent time. SAN SETS JULY 13th AS “COLLECTOR CAR APPRECIATION DAY” Annual Event Acknowledges Importance of Collectionand Restoration of Classic Cars The SEMA Action Network (SAN) announced July 13, 2012 as “Collector Car Appreciation Day.”  The date marks the third commemoration in what has become an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.  SAN is again working to secure a Congressional resolution to recognize the day’s significance. In the previous two years, the U.S. Senate helped launch national Collector Car Appreciation Day by passing resolutions at the SAN’s request.  As a result, thousands of Americans have gathered at car cruises, parades and other events to celebrate our nation’s automotive heritage.  By taking part in these events around the country, these automotive enthusiasts and related businesses ensured that their passion was honored and recognized. SAN will maintain and publicize a list of scheduled events to commemorate America’s time-tested love affair with the automobile.  Individuals, car clubs and business owners interested in publicizing events should contact SAN Director Colby Martin at 909/978-6721 or san@sema.org.  If you are unable to celebrate on July 13th, SAN encourages events to be scheduled throughout the month of July. UMRSAAC monthly meeting minutes • January 4, 2012 • The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm. by President Mike Boulka • New Members: none. • Officer’s reports: Treasurer Carole Ackerman detailed the financial report. • Merchandise Manager: Club t-shirts proposal $8/shirt if we buy 200.
