  2. Pre-Colombian America • Diverse populations of Native Americans • Settled along waterways & built intricate land trade routes to trade w/ each other • Common characteristics included: land belongs to “all of us”, everything living is sacred, family is important

Europeans come to America • 1492: Christopher Columbus looking for “shortcut” to India/Asia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9W1G3Tn31A • 1400s: Improvements in sailing & map making led to era of exploration • Lands in Caribbean, thinks he is in the “East Indies” • Claims land for Spain, rest of Europe races to get new land • Spain/Portugal sign Treaty of Tordesillas to divide W. Hem

  4. Columbian Exchange: Europeans send livestock, grains to the Americas (along with new diseases) Columbian Exchange • Europe gets corn, cacao and tobacco in exchange

  5. Spanish America • Spaniards raped many native women, new race of people born (Mestizo) • Conquistadors goal was to 1) conquer native people, 2) get gold & silver 3) spread Christianity • Native people forced into farming, ranching & mining • Most forced into Christianity (mission system)
