  2. The Lawrence Business Mentoring Program is partnership between the following organizations:

  3. Lawrence Business Mentoring Program The goal: Support the development and success of local small business owners and build a sense of community that demonstrates the nurturing of entrepreneurial talent. This is important for many reasons.

  4. Lawrence Business Mentoring Program The program: Matches experienced business owners and managers with less experienced entrepreneurs and provides a framework for establishing a mentoring relationship. This produces great value.

  5. Lawrence Business Mentoring Program A mentor is: • A listener • One who shares their experience • A support structure • An objective outside opinion • One who understands what the person is going through A mentor facilitates success.

  6. Lawrence Business Mentoring Program A mentor is NOT: • There to make decisions • Responsible for the choices their mentee makes • An investor, supplier, or customer • A crutch • Obligated to the mentee The program is voluntary and must meet the mutual needs of mentor and mentee.

  7. Lawrence Business Mentoring Program Why this instead of SCORE? There are several reasons we plan to initiate and test the mentoring program instead of a SCORE chapter. We believe greater benefit will be created.

  8. Lawrence Business Mentoring Program To start: We hope to launch the program by developing an “inventory” of mentors and build support “from the top down” to announce the program and gain visibility within the community. We hope you will consider being a mentor.

Lawrence Business Mentoring Program How much time is required? • Read training guidelines • Initial meeting with mentee and KU-SBDC • Suggestion of 2 meetings per month with mentee (phone, email, in-person, typically 1 hour) • Email KU-KSBDC time • tracking sheet monthly The program needs to work on your time schedule.

  10. Lawrence Business Mentoring Program Mentors benefit TOO: • Remember lessons learned • See your business through a different lens • You learn by teaching • Improved communication / management skills • Reverse mentoring • You are giving back Mentoring is a two-way street.

  12. Lawrence Business Mentoring Program It’s a program: This is not a loosely organized approach. We have researched other programs and have developed systems to foster the success of both mentors and mentees. We will be here to facilitate the ongoing success of the program.
