  2. In the first few centuries after the earthly life of Christ, those called by His name literally changed the world. By A.D. 391, Christianity had become so significant as to be proclaimed as the official religion of the Roman Empire.

  3. Only a few thousand people--in a huge empire of millions--mostly outcasts, religiously condemned, with virtually no political power, and using only ancient methods of communication, brought about this incredible historical feat. How did they do this in such a short time?

  4. Rome was a patriarchal society, and it’s people did not hold life to be very precious. So, if a child was born who was not male, or not the first born, and who was unwanted by the parents, the unfortunate and usually deadly truth was that they took those unwanted children out to the city dump and “threw” them away to die.

  5. The early Christians, taking Christ’s gift of life very seriously, went out and found as many of those children that they could, and brought them in and gave them a home. But, these children were already on record as natural-born Roman citizens, and many of them grew up to become leaders in their society.

  6. And they never forgot the love of Christ that gave them a chance to live. So, with that love, they changed the world.

  7. Love vrs Hate

  8. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 (NIV)

Love for Enemies 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Matthew 5:43-45 (NIV)

  10. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others?   11. Giving to the Needy   “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.    2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others.   14. Action Step 2: Show Christ’s love through secret acts

  15. 1 Corinthians 13 1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. (vv. 1-3, NIV)

  16. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV)

But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 1 Corinthians 13:8-10 (NIV)

Greek words from the New Testament: eros – sensual, sexual, implusive phileō – affection, kindness storgē – loyalty, like cherishing kindred agapē, agapeō* -- unconditional love, like God’s love ---------------------------------------- *This word was also used over 300 times in the Greek translation of the Old Testament known as the Septuagint (LXX).
