Characteristics • Volume • Mass • Inertia
Physical Properties • Descriptive : characteristics of a substance. • Examples: • Magnetic • Color • Shape • Phase • Volume • Mass • density
Chemical properties • Reactive: describes how a substance interacts with another substance. • Examples: • Reactivity • Flammable • Rusting
Physical changes • Often reversible • Does not result in a new substance • Examples: • Phase changes • Expansion • Contraction
Chemical changes • Not reversible • Always produces new substances • Reactions • Burning • Rusting • Pickling
Pure Substances • Elements: all the same kind of atoms • Compounds: all the same kinds of molecules or formula units
Mixtures • Physical combinations • Retain the properties of what makes them up • Two types: • Heterogeneous: not evenly distributed • Homogeneous: evenly distributed. Think solutions.
Separation • Compounds must be separated chemically • Elements cannot be separated conventionally • Mixtures can be separated physically
Physical separation • Differential physical properties • Solubility • Size • Looks • Magnetic • Density • Volatility
Methods • Filtering • Picking • Chromatography • Centrifugation • Evaporation
Density • Derived quality • Always mass divided by volume • Example: • g/mL
