  3. Napoleon had been defeated • The gap between rich and poor was growing • The Proletariat were becoming restless • There was still a mass of discontent in throughout Europe • The population demographic had shifted dramatically to the cities Continued….

  4. Mast people made their living in manufacturing instead of agriculture • The middle class expanded and demanded more of a voice in government • Heartland – Hinterland relationships began to form Continued….

This environment bred two conflicting ideologies • These were conservatism and liberalism • An ideology determines what will be a legitimate claim to power in any nation • Ideologies: • Give order to everyday life • Provide security and a predictable future • Provide a common value system • Provide a feeling of belonging • Define a good life • Explain how a good life can be attained Ideologies

Most ideologies provide the same information • Basic assumptions about human nature • Interpretation of the past • An explanation of the present • A vision for the future • A goal to reach and a strategy to reach it • Strong emotional appeal • A simple picture of the world that will be claimed as truth Continued
