Slide 9:CALL FOR SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORK PLACE

Neglected spiritual component: - Demands on employee time - Need for deeper sense of job meaning and fulfillment Previous leadership theories focused on varying degrees of one or more aspects of physical, mental or emotional elements of human existence

Slide 10:CALL FOR SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORK PLACE

Mounting evidence that spiritually based programs improve productivity, increase organizational commitment, and reduce absenteeism and turnover Major factor is the internet as a force for global societal and organizational change

    Slide 11:RELIGION vs. SPIRITUALITY

Religion is concerned with faith in the claims of one faith tradition or another, an aspect of which is the acceptance of some form of heaven or nirvana. Connected with this are religious teachings or dogma, ritual prayer, and so on. Spirituality is concerned with those qualities of the human spirit-such as love and compassion, patience tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, a sense of responsibility, a sense of wholeness and harmony-which bring happiness to both self and others.

    Slide 12:RELIGION vs. SPIRITUALITY

The common bridge between spirituality and religion is Altruistic love – regard or devotion to the interests of others. In religion this is manifested through the golden rule which is common to all major religions.

    Slide 13:RELIGION vs. SPIRITUALITY

From this perspective, spirituality is necessary for religion but religion is not necessary for spirituality. Spiritual leadership can therefore either be inclusive or exclusive of religious theory and practice.

    Slide 14:SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP

Comprises the actions, attitudes and values that one must adopt in intrinsically motivating one’s self and others so that they have a sense of spiritual survival through calling and membership – i.e. they experience meaning in their lives, have a sense of making a difference, and feel understood and appreciated. Fleischman, 1990; Fry, 2002; Maddock & Fulton, 1998

    Slide 15:SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP

Four fundamental forces of human existence Heart Mind Spirit Body Spiritual Leadership is viewed as the “nuclear reactor”, or intrinsic motivating force, needed to generate the fusion of body, mind, heart, and spirit necessary to power the virtual, learning organization of the 21st century

    Slide 16:SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP

Taps into fundamental needs of both Leader and followers for spiritual survival Initiated by the development of a VISION/MISSION that vividly portrays a journey which creates a sense of calling Implemented through a CULTURE, ethical system, and values that creates a sense of membership

    Slide 17:Definitions

Vision – Answers three questions: What is our journey? Why are we taking it? Who are we and what do we do? Altruistic Love – A sense of wholeness, harmony, and well-being produced through care, concern, and appreciation of BOTH self and others. Hope/Faith – The belief/conviction that things hoped for (the vision), but yet unseen or proven by evidence, are true.

Slide 27:Linking Pin Approach to Spiritual Leadership

    Slide 28:STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP

Responsible for the relationship of the external environment to choices about Vision, Mission, Goals, Strategy, and their implementation. Must establish generic values inherent in a learning organization. Of utmost importance is communicating a clear, compelling vision which gives organizational participants a sense of calling.

    Slide 29:STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP

Must establish the organization’s culture and ethical system based on the values of Hope/Faith, and Altruistic Love where followers experience membership and feel understood and appreciated. Must embody and abide in these values (walk the walk) through their personal leadership, attitudes and everyday actions.

Slide 30:VALUES of HOPE, FAITH, & ALTRUISTIC LOVE

TRUST/LOYALTY- In my chosen relationships, I am faithful and have faith in and rely on the character, ability, strength and truth of others. FORGIVENESS/ACCEPTANCE/GRATITUDE I suffer not the burden of failed expectations, gossip, jealousy, hatred, or revenge. Instead, I choose the power of forgiveness through acceptance and gratitude. This frees me from the evils of self-will, judging others, resentment, self-pity, and anger and gives me serenity, joy and peace. INTEGRITY- I walk the walk as well as talk the talk. I say what I do and do what I say.

Slide 31:HONESTY- I seek truth and rejoice in it and base my actions on it. COURAGE- I have the firmness of mind and will, as well as the mental and moral strength, to maintain my morale and prevail in the face of extreme difficulty, opposition, threat, danger, hardship, and fear. HUMILITY- I am modest, courteous, and without false pride. I am not jealous, rude nor arrogant. I do not brag. KINDNESS- I am warm-hearted, considerate, humane and sympathetic to the feelings and needs of others.

Slide 32: PATIENCE/MEEKNESS/ENDURANCE- I bear trials and/or pain calmly and without complaint. I persist in or remain constant to any purpose, idea, or task in the face of obstacles or discouragement. I pursue steadily any project or course I begin. I never quit in spite of counter influences, opposition, discouragement, suffering or misfortune. EMPATHY/COMPASSION- I read and understand the feelings of others. When others are suffering, I understand and want to do something about it. EXCELLENCE- I do my best and recognize, rejoice in, and celebrate the noble efforts of my fellows.

    Slide 33:Action Plan Strategic Level

Conduct strategic level review and analysis. Create shared organizational vision. Develop stakeholder criteria and goals. Develop strategy to implement goals. Review/Develop information systems to measure effectiveness.

    Slide 34:EMPOWERED TEAMS

Empowerment is power sharing - the delegation of power and authority It creates the cross level connection between team and individual jobs It provides the basis for strong intrinsic motivation and meets higher order needs of individuals Empowered employees are more committed to the organization through trust, hope and faith.

    Slide 35:Elements of Empowerment

Empowered teams receive information about organizational performance. Employees receive knowledge and skills to contribute to organizational goals. Employees have the power to make substantive decisions. Employees understand the meaning and impact of their job. Employees are rewarded based upon organizational performance.

    Slide 36:PERSONAL LEADERSHIP

Is the self confident ability to crystallize your thinking and establish an exact direction for your life Is the process of developing a positive self-image that gives you the courage and self-confidence necessary to choose actions that satisfy your needs

    Slide 37:PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT

A Philosophy or Creed that focuses on what you want to be (vision), to do (mission), and on the values or principles that your attitudes and actions are based. It is a personal constitution that, much like the United States Constitution, is fundamentally changeless.

    Slide 38:PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT

Like strategic leaders and in empowered teams, personal spiritual leadership must incorporate the actions, attitudes, and values of Altruistic Love as the foundation for a personal vision that creates a sense of calling and membership in their life

Slide 39:Action Plan (Empowered Teams & Personal Leadership)

Conduct team level review and analysis. Define/Implement essential elements of empowered teams. Create shared org/team vision and personal mission statements. Develop stakeholder criteria and goals. Develop strategy to implement goals Review/Develop information systems to measure effectiveness.

    Slide 40:Conclusions

Research results to date strongly support Spiritual Leadership theory. It’s measures appear reliable and the causal model testable and valid. To date, the theory on average predicts nearly 80% of the variance for organizational commitment & 30% for productivity.
