  1. CSCI220 Multimedia Literacy Course Introduction Terms and Technology

  2. Multimedia – what is it? • Give examples… • http://www.saint-andrews.co.uk • http://www.balloonmanor.com • Where have you experienced multimedia? • Use of a computer to present and combine text, graphics, audio and video with links and tools to let the user navigate, interact, create and communicate

  3. multiple media sources – involve more senses • Retention rate: • 20% of what they see (kinesthetic) • 30% of what they hear (auditory) • 50% of what they see AND hear • 80% of what they see, hear and do simultaneously “Tell me and I will forget; show me and I may remember; involved me and I will understand!”

  4. Interactive Media: Allows user to respond directly to and control any of the media aspects • involve the user • Supply depth of use and display of information • Gives user choices, freedom

  5. Two types of media Linear Media - progress through set sequence of events - presentational, slide deck - no choices of direction - can direct or focus attention to specific details

  6. Two types of media Non-linear Media - order of events dependant on user - “choose your own ending” - freedom to move and learn at own pace - more presentational flexibility

  7. History of Multimedia Multimedia (w/o computers) not new • Text with photos/graphics (newspaper/mag) • Sound with animation (tv, movies, games) • Introduction of smell (scratch and sniff stickers and movies) • “Interactive” text – choose your own ending books

  8. History of Multimedia Multimedia Growth: • Better computers – faster, more storage • Better software – easier to use • More MM uses discovered • Web spurred growth • Computer-based MM new (within last 10 years)

  9. Concepts Digitized – media elements captured as a series of 1’s and 0’s so computers can work with the media Focus - direct user’s attention to one concept Balance – between information (content) and media aspects

  10. Media Types: • Text • Graphics/images • Animation • Sound • Video

  11. Text - used as headlines, subtitles, captions - provide content and direct information - give directions, navigation • Printed text – on paper • Scanned text – hand held or flatbed scanner - digitizes page of text into graphic - OCR Optical Character Recognition

  12. Text • Electronic text – in electronic form only • E-zines, online newspapers, web content • MS Reader • Hyper text • Allows non-linear access to information • Link to related information • Like cross reference • Used in WWW, CD Rom, reference material

  13. Text • Font – style of text • Screen/Printer font – may appear different on other printers/screens • TrueType font – device independent • Bitmap converted text – make text headings a graphic to preserve exact look of font

  14. Text characteristics • Size measured in points • Serif – with feet or tails ABCabc • Sans serif ABCabc

  15. Text characteristics • Kearning – amount of space between characters: abc a b c a b c • Leading – amount of space between lines of text • Word Art – font special effects • Bold, Italics, Underline, Alignment

  16. More Word Art... This is Word Art! And more word art...

  17. Graphics/Images Two major types • Graphic Image/Illustration • 2D and 3D • “hand drawn” or computer generated • Charts and graphs • Photographic Image – digitized • Digital camera/video • scanner

  18. Many storage/file types: bmp, gif, jpg, tiff, others?

  19. Animation • graphic images that move • Convey information better than static graphic • i.e. sign language demonstration • Motion grabs user attention • Play to user’s visual acuity

  20. Sound/Audio • Waveform audio – digitized recording - describes frequency, amplitude, etc - “samples” sound thousands of time per second

  21. Sound/Audio • CD audio - play sound directly from CD - CD ROMs fast enough to jump to any point in 75th of a second - games use it for background and theme music • MIDI – Musical Instrument Digital Interface - recording and storing musical performances - specific commands for volume, tempo, timbre, etc.

  22. Video photographic animation • Live Video Feed – www.cnn.com • Videotape – play from MM app • Videodisc – laserdisc, DVD • Digital Video – digitized - stored on computer media - transmit over network (Web)
