  3. Famous • Spanish explorer • Led the first European expedition to Florida • Asociate with the legend of Fountain of Youth • Discovered Florida by looking for Fountain of Youth. • Explored the island of Puerto Rico

  4. Later Life • In 1520 last trip to Florida • Died in July 1521 • Buried in Puerto Rico in the San Jose Church • Later his remained were transferred to Cathedral of San Juan Bautista • Shot by an arrow and died from the wound

  5. Interesting Facts • In 1505 he was authorized by Ovando to establish a new town in Higuey • Home was destroyed by Spaniards • Returned to Spain to personally tell them the discovery • Kept a journal and a map • Lived in Santo Domingo an island south of Florida
