Objectives • Recall the three body types and their defining characteristics • Identify what your ideal body weight is • Be able to calculate Body Mass Index as well as determine if you are overweight or obese. • Employ safe methods of weight loss as well as understand unhealthy weight gain and weight loss • Apply resources found at Mypyramid to a healthy body weight or to the development of a healthy body weight • Design an achievable diet that promotes healthy living
Terms • Body composition – The ratio of fat to muscle, bone, and other body tissues • Somatotype – Body Type • Endomorph – A body type with a large, soft bulging body and a pear-shaped appearance • Mesomorph– a body type with a solid, muscular, and large boned physique • Ectomorph – A body type with a slender, slight build
Terms • Overweight– a condition that exceeds the desirable weight by 10%, according to height and weight charts • Obese– having an excessive amount of body fat • Ideal Body Weight – the amount a person weighs if he or she has an appropriate percentage of body fat • Anorexia Nervosa – an eating disorder in which a person refuses to eat normally, resulting in extreme thinness and even starvation • Bulimia – an eating disorder characterized by overeating followed by self-induced vomiting, use of laxatives, or very strenuous exercise to avoid weight gain
