What to do ahead of time • Check out website (www.fbes.org) • Pay balance in full ($230 total) by LAST Friday • Find a dorm friend to tell your science teacher when she asks in April • Look over packing list (adapt to 3 days)
Packing list • Sleeping bag, pillow, sheet • Toiletries including towel, flip flops for shower, and laundry bag/trash bag for dirty/wet clothes • Clothes including long pants (required on lessons), extra socks, and lots of layers • Outerwear for warmth and rain • Sturdy shoes, waterproof boots or shoes that can get wet, and slippers for dorm • Hat, sunglasses, sun block, bug spray, water bottle • Reading book, board or card games, and camera
Items not allowed • cell phones • electronics (such as handheld games, ipods/MP3 players, portable DVD players) • alarm clock • flashlights • scented body sprays/colognes (such as Axe) • food, candy, gum, soda etc. • money/jewelry/expensive items • knives/weapons
Morning of the trip • Families drop students off at school by 7:00 • Students report to cafeteria with bags • Check in with team teacher to have bag checked • Give any labeled medication to Ms. Robie • Load buses by 8:30 – boys and girls bus per team with bags at back
Arrival • Greeted by FBES staff • Unpack buses • Bring bags to rooms • Orientation • Lunch • First lesson after lunch
Schedule • 7:00 am Students wake up • 8:00-9:00 Breakfast • 9:00-9:30 Recreation Time • 9:30-11:30 Morning Lesson • 11:30-12:30 Free Time • 12:30-1:30 pm Lunch • 1:30-2:00 Rec. Time • 2:00-4:00 Afternoon Lesson • 4:00-5:30 Free Time • 5:30-6:30 Dinner • 6:30-7:00 Rec. Time • 7:00-8:30 Evening Lesson • 8:30-9:00 Back to Dorms: Lights out at 9:00. Story, songs, etc. • 9:00 pm Teachers in charge of supervision for the night
Lessons • Topics include: ABCs of Ecology, Forest, Beach, Salt Marsh, Tide Pools, and Astronomy • Preparing in class with activities and vocabulary • ACTIVE LEARNING – hiking, games, signing, skits • Keep a journal throughout that counts for grade
Meals • Healthy, “kid-friendly” breakfast, lunch, dinner • Snacks like fruit and water always available • Vegetarian alternatives/dietary restrictions • Family style – serve, share, discussions, skits, plate waste, and clean up
Free Time • Choose playground, volleyball, basketball, beach • Supervised by chaperones and teachers • Stay in one area that you signed up for • Pay attention to rules and chaperone at your area
Dorms • Pick a dorm friend ahead of time • Boys and girls separate – teams have different areas too • Shared floor bathroom • In morning to get ready and at night – not during day
Behavior Expectations • School rules on the go • Pay attention to orientation • Safety is #1 priority – ALWAYS with an adult • Lessons are a class – just outside • If you are not sure, ask • Respectful and responsible • Enjoy nature and each other
Return to School • Pack up Wednesday morning • Attend last lesson • Have “bag lunch” before boarding bus • Ride home to Elm Street • Picked up by family member out back by 2:30 pm
