Causes of War • British impressments – forcing U.S. citizens to serve in British military. • British gave military aid to Am. Indians on frontier. • Tecumseh, Shawnee Chief • “War Hawks” – new political party – urged President Madison to declare war on Britain. • Federalists were against the war!
High Points • New U.S. warship, USS Constitution, had some key victories. • U.S. won Battle of Lake Erie • Oliver Hazard Perry • U.S. defeated Tecumseh on the frontier • William Henry Harrison “We have met the enemy and they are ours” Oliver Hazard Perry
General Andrew Jackson • Victories on the Frontier • Battle of Horseshoe Bend • Defeated the Creek Indians, forcing them to give up millions of acres of their land. • Battle of New Orleans • Why important? • Fought AFTER the war ended!
Low Points • U.S. tried to invade Canada with 3 separate armies. • All 3 failed. Oops. • The British then invaded the U.S. and attacked the capital. • They burned it to the ground. Double Oops.
Ending the War • Treaty of Ghent -- The treaty had been signed on December 24, 1814 before the Battle of New Orleans took place. • Each nation returned to the area it conquered.
