  2. Petroleum Petroleum or crude oil is naturally occuring, flammable liquid consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, that are found beneath the earth’s surface.

  3. Extraction of Alkane from Petroleum

  4. Petroleum gas:- For cooking • 2) Petrol:- For car engine Uses of Fractions of Petroleum • 3) Naphtha:- Used in petroleum industries Uses:-

  5. 4) Kerosene:- For jet engine and oil stoves • 5) Diesel Oil:- For diesel engine • 6) Lubricating Oil:- For lubrication and waxing • 7) Bitumen:- For road surfacing

  6. Cracking of Alkane

  7. Hydration of Alkenes: Preparation of Alcohols When any alkenes are mixed with steam and passed over Phosphoric acid (as catalyst) at high pressure ( 60 atm) and temperature (300OC) , an alcohol is produced. + H2O 

  8. Uses of Alcohol 1) As a beverage:-Large amounts of ethanol are used in alcohol drinks. Over 90% of UK adults population drinks alcohol 2) As a solvent:- Ethanol is a good solvent and safest of all alcohols. It is often used to dissolve substances that are insoluble in water.

  9. 3) As a fuel:- Alcohol is the future fuel. Methanol and ethanol can be used as a alternative to fossil fuels as they are very clean. Ethanol is a renewable fuel. So, it is really useful for countries without oil industries. U.S.A is using corn as fuel. Australia is using banana as fuel. Brazil is using sugarcane as fuel.

  10. Oxidation of Alcohol When alcohol is oxidized, carboxylic acid is produced. Here, very powerful oxidizing agents such as Potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) or Potassium per manganate (KMnO4) is used.

  12. Uses of Esters Ester are used for a variety of things. The main thing esters are used for is producing fragrances and artificial flavorings to drinks such as juices and perfumes. It also gives the sweetness to fruits.
