What is it? • Message medium listener • We study how messages are being put across by a variety of media and how they will be received by a variety of audiences • E.g. messages about how to ‘be a man’
Example • ‘The Vet and the Noob’ • We discuss: • Why the Vet is so much more attractive than the Noob • What sorts of messages about manliness are being sent out here (macho, fighters, heroes, etc.) • Suitability for audience (no consequences) • Comparison with the experience of actually playing the game
What do we study? • Film • Music Videos • Computer Games • TV • Magazines • News • Advertising • Websites • Radio
Breakdown • 50% Exam (1 paper – 2 ½ hours – 3 questions) • 50% Coursework (pre-production, production, evaluation) • Coursework MAY include animated elements or be entirely animated in groups of up to 4 or alone… • Taught by: Mr Healey; Mr Evans; Mrs Drake; Mrs Johnson; Mrs Close
Our Results 2010-11 *On average, our media students have indicator grades of B/C (55 sample size)
Our Track Record • In 2010-2011, Media got the best results at AS level in the entire English Faculty… • …we also got the best results at A2 in the entire English Faculty, finishing ahead of: • English • English Literature • English Language • Classical Civilisations
Our Track Record • The Media & Film Department sent more students away to University last year than any other single department in the school. • Destinations included: • Bath Spa – Media Communications • Brunel – Multi-Media Technology and Design • Winchester – Journalism • Bournemouth – Film Production • Buckinghamshire – Film & TV Production x 3
Take this course if: • You have ever wondered ‘why they did it like that’ • You want to learn more about Films, Magazines, Games, TV, News, Websites, Radio and Music Videos • You enjoy being creative • You can handle essays (Cs or better in English)
Do not take this course if: • You are expecting it to be a doss • You are expecting it to be easy • You struggle with essays (Ds or below in English) • You aren’t really interested in learning about the world around you
BTEC Media • Level 2 2 GCSEs from A*-C • One year course (part of access course) • 5 hours per week (av. one lesson per day) • 2 Modules • Animation – you make your own animations • My Voice – documentaries about teen lives/issues • Very useful for people who did not get 5 A*-Cs in Year 11 and want to boost their grades • Pass Rate = 100%
