What are some ways you think anti-consumerists have tried to resist the control and influence of marketing/consumerism?
Why? Why would anyone want to do this? Anti-consumerism refers to the socio-political movement against the equating of personal happiness with consumption and the purchase of material possessions Anti-consumerists believe advertising plays a huge role in human life by informing values and assumptions of the cultural system, deeming what is acceptable and determining social standards. This is a problem.
How? • Culture Jamming • “to disrupt or subvert mainstream cultural institutions, including corporate advertising” • Jammers want to disrupt the unconscious thought process that takes place when most consumers view a popular advertising and bring about a turnabout • Adbusters (parodying)
