Making the case Georgia University System 10-year study of academic outcomes of students who study abroad findings: Improved academic performance upon returning home • Average GPA of 3.24 improved to 3.30 • For students with lower standardized exam scores, 3.21 cumulative upon graduation compared to 3.14

  3. Higher graduation rates • Four-year graduation rates were 49.6% for study abroad students compared to 42.1% for control group and 24% for the Georgia University System • Six-year rates were 88.7% for study abroad participants compared to 83.4% and 49.3%

This study is proven time and again • Indiana University 2009 study revealed that 95.3% of study abroad students graduated within 6 years compared to 68.5% who did not study abroad • Students earned higher GPAs: 3.21 compared to 3.1 • Study abroad participants had a higher probability of completing a Bachelor’s Degree in four years; .91% compared to .84% (http://globaledresearch.com/study-abroad-impact.asp)

Americans’ views on value of international education Findings from a 2010 survey sponsored by NAFSA (Association of International Educators) • 57% of respondents agree international education is critically important • 73% of respondents felt U.S. higher education needed to do a better job of teaching students about the world so they might compete globally (www.nafsa.org/_/2011_EdStudentsGlobalEconomy.pdf)

  8. ETSU and Study Abroad Initiatives Over the past six year several initiatives have enhanced international education opportunities. Faculty-led summer study abroad programs have increased from 2 in 2005 to 12 in 2013 Establishment of the International Education Scholarship funded by ETSU student fees

  9. ETSU Semester Study Abroad Initiative • Provides ETSU students an opportunity to complete a semester of study in their major (and/or general education) with courses that will transfer as identified and pre-approved ETSU courses • Opens the gate to any student considering or attending ETSU

  10. John Cabot University in Rome, Italy • Independent, 4-year liberal arts university accredited by the Middle State commission on Higher Education • Offers undergraduate degrees and study abroad programs to English speaking students from all over the world • JCU is permitted by the U.S. Department of Education as eligible under Title IV of the HEA (Federal Direct Student Loan Programs) • JCU serves over 1,000 students from Italy, the EU, and a variety of other international origins including the U.S.

  11. Current transferrable courses • A suite of nine Gen Ed courses • Six degree programs with substantial course offerings • One major with five transferrable courses Advertising, Public Relations, Marketing Art History English History Political Science International Studies

  12. Cost ETSU students receive a 10% discount on program fees from John Cabot University. For spring 2014, program costs are: • Program only = US$10,750; with 10% discount = $9,675 • Program + Housing = US10,750 + $5,700 = $16,450; with 10% discount = $14,805 • Note there is a housing option for $4,800 (total with discount = $13,995). • Program + Housing + Meal Plan = US10,750 + $5,700 + $595 = $17,045; with 10% discount = $15,340.50

  13. In addition • Students are also responsible for the application fee (US$50) • Airline travel to and from Rome • Eduservicesfee (US$275) • Health insurance (if current insurance not accepted in Italy) • Students must also provide documentation of financial support (at least $500 per month)

  14. Scholarships • ETSU International Education Scholarships up to $5,000 • Special scholarships in the amount of $1000 are also available for the ETSU-JCU program from private donations. To qualify, a minimum cumulative GPA 3.25 is required. • JCU will assist in processing U.S. financial aid for Stafford Loans and the PLUS program, and may provide work-study opportunities.

  15. First Steps • Have a valid U.S. passport • Apply to JCU (US$50 application fee); letter of recommendation required • Apply for a Study Visa, granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Italy • Register with Eduservices prior to arrival to arrange for a Permit to Stay [note: ~$275 US] • Obtain and provide documentation of medical insurance valid/appropriate to Italy (options) • Comply with requirements for documentation and for orientations
