John Cabot Aka Giovanni Caboto Juan Caboto
Early Life • Grew up in Venice, Italy. Birthdate unknown. • Venice was a major trading hub for ships in the Mediterranean ocean. Cabot began sailing by 1483. • Worked as a trader and civil engineer around Venice for about 10 years – at one point he was put in charge of a building a stone bridge in Venice. • 1495 – moved to England to escape a loan he owed money on back in Venice.
Preparing for the voyage • Europe still thought Columbus has discovered the “Indies,” (what we call Asia today) • Cabot thought he could find a faster route by sailing north • Convinced Italian backers living in England to sponsor his journey • 1496 – 1st voyage. Argued with the crew and had to turn back. • 1497 – 2nd voyage. Sailed from England with one boat in search of the “Indies.”
Route of Exploration • 1 Boat: • The Matthew • 18-20 crew members
Discovery of North America • June 24, 1497 – Landfall somewhere in North America. Location up for debate. Probably somewhere in Canada. • Did not go farther than 'beyond the shooting distance of a crossbow’ into the woods. • Planted the flag of England and the Pope. Claimed the land for England and the Roman Catholic Church. • Refilled fresh water for the boat. • Did not see any Native Americans but found the remains of a fire, a trail, nets, and a stone tool. • Returned to England the way he came.
Legacy • Cabot returned to England and was seen as a hero. • In 1498 he set out on a journey back to North America. Unclear whether he died on the trip or returned to England. Did not realize he had discovered a new continent. John Cabot sculpture in Bristol, England.
