John Cabot’s Early Life • Cabot was born in 1450 in Genoa, Italy. • He was born “Giovanni Cabato.” In English “John Cabot.” • Before he became a explorer he was a mapmaker and trader. • He moved to Bristol, England in the year of 1483. • He got married and had three sons.
Where and Why Did He Sail? • John Cabot sailed for England in the late 1400s. • John wanted to find a fast route to Asia. • He believed he could find another route to Asia that would be faster than the one Christopher Columbus had used. • He sailed to now known as Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. • He was sent by King Henry to bring back all the jewels and goods he could possibly find.
Was He Successful? • John Cabot arrived June 24, 1497 near Cape Breton and Newfoundland. He discovered many of the islands on the coastlines. • John Cabot was successful because many of his first expeditions led to the first of England’s claims in Canada. • Cabot did not find many jewels or goods. However, he did find a great fishing area now known as the Grand Banks with plentiful fish.
John Cabot • During his first three voyages they were forced to return back to England due to lack of food, water, and disagreements among crew members. • Him and his crew never returned from their 4th voyage.
All About John Cabot • In Italian, Caboto ( John Cabot’s last name) means- a coastal sea man. Commonly given to many navigators and sailors. • No one truly knows where Cabot’s crew disappeared to. • His ship TheMatthew weighed over 50 tons!
