7. As I said earlier, employers are KEY to the success of the Apprenticeship programme. They are at the heart of the programme. Their willingness to offer a place is a necessary condition for any Apprenticeship to happen. One of the greatest issues we face is the fact that there are thousands of people looking for Apprenticeships and not enough employers offering places.
To try to redress this balance, Gordon Brown, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, asked Sir Roy Gardner to establish and lead a group of senior business leaders who are engaged with Apprenticeships. This group, the Apprenticeship Ambassadors Network, was established in April 2006. It is a successor to the Apprenticeships Task Force, which Sir Roy also led and which was established to look at the barriers that prevented employers from getting involved in Apprenticeships.
