Making PBIS Work In High Schools!Mr. Justin MartinAssistant Principal, Tuscarora High School
Agenda • The need for data • Staff involvement • Student involvement • Recognition • Making PBIS visible • Role of 20/20
Tuscarora by the Numbers • First year school opened up with 1100 students • 44% Minority/ 56% White/Middle Eastern • Around 550 referrals • 2011-2012 school year we will have 1600 students
Data Collection • Data should drive all decision making! • How do you decide what data to collect? • Referrals • Tardies to class/school • What to do with the data? • Committee • Faculty • Provide Positive Reinforcers
Staff Involvement • Let your staff help in deciding what the behavior focus should be. • In my experience, this has helped in the reinforcement of the decisions that are made by the committee. • Participate in the development of the discipline flow chart.
The Role of Advisory • Meets every Tuesday for 30 minutes • Teach and re-teach school expectations • Establish relationships with students • Gain student participation in PBIS
Student Participation • Allow students to recognize teachers for exhibiting school characteristics! • Recognize a PBIS staff member of the month based on student recommendation forms. • Students should also be represented on the PBIS committee.
Using PBIS for Recognition • Teacher/Faculty recognition • Teacher rugs • Reserved parking spots • Diamond Award • Student Recognition • Husky nation tickets • Prize wheel • Pizza parties • Private lunches
Make PBIS visible • Posters throughout the school • RISE poster • Classroom poster • Sporting Events • PBIS sponsored Faculty Basketball Game • Announcements • Weekly announcements • Presentations to the faculty
PBIS Visibility cont…. • Presentations to the faculty • Present data monthly • Use your acronym in as many ways as possible. • Library • Science class • Mission Statement
Overcoming Hurdles • Established faculty vs. new faculty • Timing is the key with established faculty • Don’t rush to gain support of established faculty • Data vs. no data • Using data to gain support of established faculty • Tracking kids and establishing 20/20 rule • Little support vs. full support from administration
