National curriculum requirements: • Statutory Requirements • To compare and group together different types of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties • To describe in simple terms how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock • To recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter • Non-Statutory Guidance • To explore different types of rock found within the local environment • (cross-curricular links with Geography)

  3. Experimenting with rocks: We have been finding out which rocks are permeable and let water soak into them.

  4. More experimenting with rocks: Scratch testing rocks: Investigating the strength of chalk, limestone, slate marble and granite

  5. Did you know that igneous rock is lava from a volcano that has cooled down? Here are some volcanoes that we made as part of our homework project about rocks. Some year 3 pupils have used vinegar and baking soda to make their volcanoes erupt and explode!
