The Outsiders S.E Hinton 1967 realistic fiction. Mikayla B 6. Setting. “Back in the day.” If the setting was different, like a different year most of the events that happened in the book wouldn’t have because that kind of stuff doesn’t go on anymore. Characters. Conflict.

The OutsidersS.E Hinton1967realistic fiction Mikayla B 6
Setting • “Back in the day.” If the setting was different, like a different year most of the events that happened in the book wouldn’t have because that kind of stuff doesn’t go on anymore.
Conflict • Ponyboy gets beat up by the Socs. • Ponyboy is a part of the Greasers who are lower class than the Socs • Socs and Greasers are enemies • The Socs are bad people and they brought out a switch blade on Ponyboy and scared • Man vs. Man
Summary of Plot • There are different groups/classes of people in the city. There are two main ones by the name of Socs and Greasers. The Socs are known for trouble and always attacking Greasers terribly.
Theme • Don’t treat someone different just because they aren’t like you. • Page 3: “We’re poorer than the Socs we’re middle class. The Socs jump greasers and wreck houses and throw beer bottles.” • Page 55: “You know what a greaser is? Bob asked. White trash with long hair.” • Page 55: “you know what a soc is? I said, my voice shaking with rage. White trash with mustangs and madras.”
Point of View • This is told in first person. It’s being told by ponyboy. It would be different if it didn’t come from him because we wouldn’t know what happened to him in full detail and how he felt through the story. If it came from someone else we probably wouldn’t know who Darry and soda pop were or what happened to his parents.
Symbolism • The switch represents what the Socs were known for. The Socs carried it around with them and threatened it on the greasers every time they saw them and sometimes even used use it on them. http://stephenking.wikia.com/wiki/Switchblade
Recommendation • I recommend this book. I like it because it’s not present day, so you can imaging what it was like back then. Also all the bad stuff that went on and doesn’t happen anymore. It gives you full detail and emotions/feelings of the characters throughout the story.
