  7. CONGRESS OF VIENNA 1815 RESPONSE TO CONGRESS OF VIENNA 1820s – revolts –Greece, German States, Russia (Decembrists), Italian States, also some in Spain. Independence of Latin American colonies from Spain/Portugal 1830 – France: the French get rid of Charles X and crown Louis Phillipe the “liberal King” Belgian indedpendence, Polish uprising (crushed by Russia) 1848 – LOTS of revolutionary activity: France, German States, ALL OVER the Austrian Empire (we will focus on Hungary and Vienna)

Shortly after the 1830 Revolution in France, French writer Victor Hugo wrote that he yet again heard "the dull sound of revolution, still deep down in the earth, pushing out under every kingdom in Europe." The center of this underground activity was in Paris, and in 1848 that "subterranean" sound that Hugo heard exploded above ground in France and then in nearly every part of Europe.

  19. The pattern of 1848 Revolutions Your job: Look at Ms. Greenberg’s wonderful cartoon. Explain to the person next to you how it fits the pattern. Use specific facts to illustrate the general pattern.

Take noteson the one you are assigned (Austria or Prussia) on your chart on Assignement #4 With your group of four • Discuss the details of each one and fill in the chart for the one you haven’t written about yet. • Clarify how it fits the pattern of 1848 revolutions (Ms. Greenberg’s cartoon).
