  9. Poetry (Open TB to p225 & IN to p15 to take notes) • look & sound of words are inseparable from meaning • word “poet” comes from Greek word “poiētēs”, meaning “one who makes or fashions” • writing a poem=careful choice/crafting of language

  10. Poetry • form: physical arrangement of words • Includes length & placement of lines into stanzas • Usually obvious pattern (words, rhyme, syllables) • free verse: no strict, formal pattern

Poetry • Sound devices • alliteration: repetition of initial consonant sounds • assonance: repetition of vowel sounds w/i words • consonance: repetition of consonant sounds w/i or end of words • rhyme: repetition of final sounds • rhyme scheme • onomatopoeia: words that are spelled how they sound

  12. Poetry • rhythm: pattern of stressed vs. unstressed syllables in a line • meter: repeated pattern throughout poem

Poetry • figurative language: conveys meanings beyond literal denotative meanings of words • simile: direct comparison between 2+ unlike things with signal word “like” or “as” • metaphor: direct comparison between 2+ unlike things with no signal word • personification: giving human qualities to non-humans

Sonnets • Open TB to p234 & IN to p17 • Split pg in half, down the middle • On the left, copy Sonnet 18 • Count # of lines in total • Mark out rhyme scheme • end of rhyme pattern=end of unit of thought • Draw lines between the groups of rhymes • quatrain: group w/ 4 lines • couplet: group w/ 2 lines • Paraphrase each stanza on the right
