Learning New Skills • Most of us take part in some activities without having to learn new skills. This is because we have already learned some skills e.g. running, catching, throwing, speaking. For most people these are simple skills and can be done easily. During your course you will look at ways to learn a NEW SKILL.
One way to do this is… • N • E • D • I • C • T
Learning Skills N -Teacher NAMES the skill - eg. Smash E -Teacher EXPLAINS the skill - Explain the movements D-Teacher DEMONSTRATES the skill - Show the skill to be learned I-Learner IMITATES the skill - Copy the demonstration C-Learner CORRECTS the fault - After the teacher says what the MAIN fault is (FEEDBACK) - Until the skill can be done well(REFINEMENT) T-Learner TRAINS or practices the skill
Other ways to learn a skill Whole – part – whole • Where you look at a whole action, isolate and practice one part, then return to the whole action Eg. Swimming Front Crawl - Whilst performing the front crawl, the teacher said my leg kick was inefficient because I kick from the knee rather than the hip. Using this feedback, I took a float and worked just on my leg action. Once I had changed my leg kick action I then returned to the full stroke.
Other ways to learn a skill Gradual Build Up • Where you start off with part of the skill and gradually add more to it until you perform the whole skill. (good for learning difficult or dangerous skills) Eg. Backflip - When I was learning the backflip, I started by trying a backward roll. The next step was to do the backflip from a trampette onto a safety mat with the teacher holding a jumper round my waist for support. The next step was the same but without the jumper, but with the teacher still helping, then with no support. The next stage was from a bench to a mat, then finally a backflip from the ground.
For feedback to be effective, it needs to be positive… “Good choice of shot” “Haha, you missed” “ What are you doing? That was rubbish” “Try again, you nearly got it” “You didn’t swing the racket properly” “Next time try to follow through the shot to help you get more distance”

Types of feedback • Internal or Kinaesthetic When you feel the movement and know whether it is good or bad • External How others assess your performance (eg. Teacher/peer feedback)
Forms of external feedback • Verbal- someone tells you • Visual- you watch your performance • Written-score card etc
Open and Closed Skills • An Open skill is one that is dependant on outside influences and the execution of the skill may differ slightly each time it is carried out. Eg… Overhead Clear (badminton)
Open and Closed Skills • A Closed skill is one that cannot be effected by outside influences. Eg… Dart Throw
Swimming Revision • Each day we will revise one topic • Anything within these that you still do not remember or need help with write it down and come and ask me!!!!!!
Review • Friction - Some friction is good and sports players try to increase friction to improve their performance - Sometimes friction is bad and sports players try to decrease the friction to help their performance
… in addition - Friction that effects swimmers and cyclists (for example) is known as… Resistance - This is when the water, or air, passing the person slows them down. How much this effects the athlete depends on how much friction occurs.
How do you reduce resistance? • streamlining
Streamlining • What is meant by being streamlined? • How does it help your performance?
Review • Forces - Newton’s third law? “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction” - Can you give an example?
Where is the force being applied? Preparation Downwards from legs into diving block Action Hands then body pushing through the water
Review • Levers - Longer levers create more speed at the end of the lever and in turn generates more power.
Homework • Name a skill. (1) • Describe in detail how you were taught it. (4) • Was the skill an open or closed skill and why? (1)
