Europe’s View of the Colonies • Viewed the colonies as their property • Expected to remain loyal, and submit to any decisions made by their mother country • Colonies were controlled by governors • Produced crops and goods to be sent to England • Many colonies had legislators that recommend to governors • Governors were appointed by the king
Colonies View of Europe • Some moved to America to escape restrictions in England such as- persecution, for religions, or extreme political views • Colonies got tired of the restrictions placed on them by their mother country • Mother country made it harder to sell goods
Stamp Act • Was one of the most unpopular taxes ever past by the Britain governments • Made money for the mother country by stamps because Britain wanted more money • Was first step for the colonies drive towards independents • Went into effect on November 1, 1765 • Reaction was very loud and violent because colonists thought they were being treated unfairly • Documents of court, proceedings, land, and business papers were all taxed because they were printed on paper • Britain and colonists were involved
Tea Act • The 1773 act when Britain gave a monopoly (to completely control an industry) on the tea sales to the East India Company • They lowered the price so that others tea would be more expensive, so people would want to buy their tea. • Some colonists traveled to New York to discuss the best way to response to the taxes • The colonies and Britain were involved
Intolerable Acts Part One • 1774 laws sponsored by the British Prime Minister effecting the colonies taxes, the laws were called the Quebec, Quartering acts, Boston port acts, Ministration of Justice acts, and Currency acts, and Massachusetts Government act. • The Mass. act did away with elections for the councilors and assistants in the Massachusetts' Bay Colony, making the positions made by "his Majesty's permission.”
Intolerable Acts Part Two The Administration of Justice Act- “effectively got rid of the local administration of justice, providing that the Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony could direct that any examination or appeal be tried in Great Britain or in another British Colony” The Quartering act- “Made the colonies pay for the British so the British could have a home and made the colonies give them food, shelter clothes, and hospitality.” Currency act- “didn’t allow the colonies from making any paper money in any form. The colonists hated this new law. However, at first they found it difficult to resist the taxes effectively.” Quebec act- “It gave the French Canadians complete religious freedom and restored the French form of civil law, and didn’t give the colonies freedom.” Boston Port act- “The Boston Port Act was made by the Britain to punish colonists for the Boston Tea Party, when they threw tea from East India Company ships into the harbor. The act guarded ships from entering the harbor.”
Boston Massacre • In 1767, the parliament in great Britten lost the battle over the stamp act • “Great Britten still wanted control over the colonies, so they put taxes on glass, paper, lead, and tea.” • In 1770 Colonies got mad and when the British solders came to enforce taxes, so the colonists threw snowballs, stick, and rocks at them. • Solders got mad and opened fire, killing five colonists
Boston Tea Party • Taxes on tea from Britain effects tea business in 1773 • In response to the taxes, a group of colonists dressed up as Native Americans and went on a cargo ship in the Boston port and dumped loads of tea into the harbor • In response to that behavior, British passed a new law saying that the colonists could not go to the Boston harbor until they paid for the tea • That made many colonists lose their jobs
