Industrialization caused new issues Immigrants Cities: What problems/issues did cities have? • Immigrants come to USA • To escape issues in their countries • To work • Immigrants were ignorant to new nation • To USA laws • Where to live • How to get a job • Type of money • Cities became over crowed • Cities have no one in charge to fix issues • Immigrants flooding cities = over crowing, health issues, crime increases

What is a political machine? • Because of all the issues caused by industrialization, cities needed help • Political machines were created in many cities to address the issues caused by industrialization • A political machine is an organized group that was created to handle issues in cities • It is a group of people who joined together to solve the issues, but they did it by corrupt means
Organization of political machines The boss/group leaders controlled the politicians, business leaders, police officers, and all aspects of the citieswith votes. Organized the people to vote for the laws and people. Provided jobs, and other services for loyalist, many immigrants. Many immigrants and poor Americans who needed jobs, housing, and other help. In exchange for assistance from the political machine, immigrants would vote the way the political machines wanted.

How did people respond to political machines Immigrants Middle-class Americans • Supported political machines • Immigrants relied on the political machines • Jobs • Housing • Basic help • In exchange for these services from the political machine, immigrants would vote for laws, or politicians • Teachers, store owners, honest people • Saw the political machines as corrupt • why? • PM supported criminals, paid off police, and paid people to vote • This group began to fight for a change/reform of how cities were ran.
