Red Oak Elementary 1st Grade Curriculum Night 2019-2020 Welcome, families & students!

1st Grade Learning Expectations • Mastery of at least 220 words from Fry’s 1st 300 words • Fluent reading at level J or higher and a Lexile score of 350L-450L or higher by the end of the year • Strong math reasoning/strategy use-explaining reasoning verbally and in writing: Why the answer is what it is and how did you get that answer? • Proficiency is at least an average of 80% on each domain on the 1st grade report card.

First Grade Report Card • Students in grades K-4 receive a report card every 9 weeks. • Report card grades are Exemplary (90-100), Proficient (80-89), Approaching (74-79), Limited Progress (70-73), Insufficient Progress (Below 70). • Items that are not evaluated in a term will be shaded. • It is possible for a student to move levels ( ex: from Proficient to Approaching, etc…) when more rigorous elements of a standard are introduced.
Curriculum • We use the Henry County Teaching & Learning Standards: • https://schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.us/Page/119112 • Another resource is www.georgiastandards.org • Math – count & represent #s to 120, addition & subtraction facts to 20, word problems, place value, add/sub 2 digit #s, measurement, time to hour & half hour, interpret data on charts, shapes – 2D & 3D, fractions – ½ & ¼ • Science – weather, magnets, light, sound, plants & animals • Social Studies – continents & oceans, our city, county, state, country & continent, goods, services, scarcity, producers, consumers, cardinal directions, describe key historical figures
Curriculum • Writing – narrative, informational, & opinion • Use conventions of capitalization, punctuation, & spelling • Use conventions of English grammar & usage • Reading – compare/contrast stories, explain difference between fiction & non-fiction texts, retell stories using key details and identify the main idea • Decode words using our new resource Open Court Phonics • Read with accuracy and fluency (60 words per minute)
Accelerated Reader (A.R.) • A.R. is a program that measures your child’s comprehension abilities after reading a book. • Tips for a successful experience with A.R. • Home Connect • Repeated reading (at least 3 times)/discussion of text • Green dot & star = kindergarten, blue dot & star = 1st grade, orange dot & star = 2nd grade, red dot & star = 3rd grade • At the end of 1st grade, students should be able to independently read blue dot/star books. • Students cannot look in the book during the test. • Class volunteers would be appreciated from • 7:20-7:45.
