  2. Showing sentences… • Answer the questions “who, what, where , when , why and how” • Use action verbs instead of “to be” verbs • Use strong adjective and adverbs • Use figurative language • Use dialogue ( if appropriate) • Appeal to the five senses ( taste, touch, smell, hearing, sight)

  3. Who, what ,where, when, why, how? Telling Showing After 12 years of teaching chemistry, Mr. Smith lost it. He began oinking like a pig and shouting “ Merry Christmas” as he ran though the halls of Legacy High School. It was April. Mr. Smith is crazy.

  4. Specific verbs? Telling Showing Her jaw tightened and the veins in her temples throbbed. Her eyes flashed darts at me. The words erupted from her mouth: “Stay after class to speak to me, young man.” The final hiss in her voice sent shivers down my spine. She was mad.

  5. Specific Nouns and Adjectives Telling Showing My mouth watered as the fragments steam rose off the cheese. The rich blend of yeast, tomatoes, and spices tantalized my nostrils. I gasped with pleasure as I took my first bite into the moist crust, my teeth sinking into the succulent blend of cheese and tomato sauce. The pizza was good.

  8. How do I apply this to analytical writing? • Add specific details to your claims, data and warrants. • Change “to be”/linking verbs to action verbs • Use Rhetorical devices and figurative language • Similes, metaphors, hyperboles, anaphora, etc.
