Conclusion APhA Policy Committee Report • Pharmacists are well positioned in communities across the country and well trained to provide clinical services to patients with emergent and chronic care needs. As FDA and others consider new and innovative ways to increase access to certain medications, it is important that patients have access to pharmacists to assist and counsel patients to ensure that medications are used safely and effectively. • APhA supports the concept of dispensing medications with conditions of safe use and appreciates FDA mentioning the use of a pharmacist intervention in addition to innovative technologies as conditions of safe use. A potential new drug paradigm would improve patient access and public health by better leveraging the skills and accessibility of pharmacists, much like the profession has done with the success of pharmacist-administered immunizations.The Association also views the concept being considered by FDA as a great opportunity for pharmacists to further communicate and collaborate with physicians and other providers. Although logistical questions, challenges, and other uncertainties must be resolved, none are significant enough to prevent this important concept from becoming a reality.

This is important because we want to ensure that pharmacists have the ability to join medical homes, accountable care organizations, and other systems of care where provider status may be important.” • “primary care physician workforce shortage”. • “Pharmacists are highly trained and widely deployed throughout communities and so it makes perfect sense to use this health care workforce to provide basic primary care services to our residents.”

APhA Annual Medication Take Back • Our APhA Annual Medication Take Back will be held on two days in the lower level of St. John’s on campus: • 1)      April 13, 2013 (Sat):    5:30 – 7 PM • 2)      April 14, 2013 (Sun):   10:45 AM – 12:45 PM •             Bring expired/unwanted meds or just drop by to say hello!  The lower level of St. John’s can be reached by going down the stairs on the side of the building.

National Meeting Reimbursement • We have the list of people qualifying for reimbursement and have submitted it to administration for review • The review for the reimbursements take around a month to complete so reimbursements will hopefully be out in a 6-8 weeks • We will keep everyone updated as information becomes available to us so please do not email us asking when you will get your reimbursement

18. Neil Hjorth • Past President • From Neil, • “Let it suffice to say that I did what I could with the cards that were dealt to me. I worked to help make our chapter what I envisioned it could be. Unfortunately life doesn’t always work out how we plan, and as much as we work to change the world, it takes more work than most of us have time to contribute, especially while in a professional program such as pharmacy school. I just hope that what I was able to do came across and made the chapter better. With all that being said, I am very honored at being nominated, and would be extremely thrilled to receive such an award.”

Nicole Walters • Katy’s Kids Chair • From Nicole, • “During my time at Creighton, I have been involved in many organizations, including APhA-ASP.  During my P1 year I was the distance liaison for Katy’s Kids and then I become the chair during my P2 year.  I was responsible for scheduling presentations, finding volunteers, training volunteers, and collecting feedback from schools.  While I was the chair of the committee, I made it my goal to get the committee more organized.  I first streamlined the process of scheduling presentations.  I created an email account specifically for Katy’s Kids in order for schools to be able to easily contact the chairs to set up a presentation.  This email account was attached to a calendar, so that there was one central place to schedule presentations.  I also created a manual for the future Katy’s Kids chairs detailing the different responsibilities.  Finally, I made sure I was available to the new chairs if they had any questions or concerns.”

Alison Sage • Operation Immunization chair • From Alison • “When I stepped into the challenging role of APhA-ASP’s Operation Immunization chair as a P2, it was quite an underdeveloped organization. I spent countless hours over the years with many individuals further developing the program. I also managed numerous community events, developed new committee positions, organized and educated faculty and student volunteers, performed research, beta tested Eventbrite, and created disease state posters not only during the school year, but during my summers off as well. In my 3 years as chair, third and then fourth year mentor, I have been able to move this organization from being a two-person committee to one of the largest volunteer campaigns for APhA-ASP. During my time in OI, we have performed approximately 6,725 vaccinations, 6,037 health screenings, attended 66 community events and recruited 376 volunteers. I believe that my efforts have further developed APhA-ASP into an organization that can make us all proud.”
