MRM 2012: Policies • Each university or college of pharmacy in Region 5 was asked to submit a resolution and an alternative resolution • 7 universities / colleges of pharmacy • 12 resolutions + alternative resolutions submitted • These resolutions will be voted at Region 5’s MRM 2012 • Look for an email containing these policies after the meeting • Have an opinion on these? • Email Jill Mutziger, chapter delegate, @ JillMutziger@creighton.edu
MRM 2012: Our Policies • Proposed Resolution Title: Classification of OTC Products by Third Party Payers • Proposed Wording:APhA-ASP encourages prescription insurance companies to include non-prescription products which are determined to be too hazardous for indiscriminate use on their co-pay tiers if pharmacists are not allowed to personally dispense the drug upon a patient’s request • 1984.2 – Reclassification of Drugs:APhA-ASP recommends the incorporation of a third category of drugs to be dispensed personally at the pharmacist’s discretion and upon the patient’s request. This category of drugs all includes those drugs in the process of changing from prescription only to non-prescription status, and those present non-prescription products which are determined to be too hazardous for indiscriminate use
MRM 2012: Our Policies *Backup* • Proposed Resolution Title: Clarification of “Take as Directed” Directions • Proposed Wording:APhA-ASP recommends that when a prescriber includes “take as directed” on a prescription, a pharmacist should be required to verify the exact directions with either the prescriber or the patient before dispensing the medication • 1994.4 – Consistency of Patient Counseling and Pharmaceutical Care: APhA-ASP recommends regulation to require prescribers to provide complete directions on prescriptions and prescription orders, instead of “take as directed”. APhA- ASP also encourages pharmacists to solicit adequate directions from physicians if not provided
Election: Position Detailsadapted from APhA-ASP’s website • President • Be familiar with all operations of APhA and APhA-ASP • Schedule and lead chapter and executive meetings • Enforce Constitution and Bylaws of APhA and the chapter • Lead the executive committee • Serve as an ex-officio member of all committees • Term length for all positions: March 2013-2014 • President-Elect • Serve one-year term as President-Elect and one-year term as President • Two year term • Become conversant in all aspects of the office of President • Serve as an ex-officio member of all committees • Serve as an advisor to the President • Oversee the completion of the CAA report due 7/15 • Attend the APhA Summer Leadership Institute (July)
Election: Position Detailsadapted from APhA-ASP’s website • Vice President • Be familiar with all operations of APhAand APhA-ASP • Assume the duties of President in the absence of the President • Serve as an advisor to the President • Work with chapter members, officers, and advisors to develop a mission statement, strategic plan, and goals for the chapter • Serve as PHPSG representative • Secretary • Record complete minutes of all chapter and executive meetings • Send out minutes to chapter and executive committee • Assist with the completion of the CAA report
Election: Position Detailsadapted from APhA-ASP’s website • Treasurer • Record all cash receipts and disbursement from chapter accounts and to oversee all chapter fundraising activities • Provide a detailed annual report of expenses and income to the advisors by April 15 • Issue reimbursement checks • Public Relations • Write and distribute the chapter newsletter (beginning this year) • Publicize APhA-ASP activities on campus • Publicize American Pharmacists Month

FYI – After the Election • Elections take place in November • Retreat in February for proper transition • TBD – however closer to the beginning of February • Newly elected officers will take office March 1, 2013 • Meaning: newly elected officers are not responsible for any work from November to March • However, this 3-month period is for a transition/learning period – you won’t just be thrown in there! • Recap of Important Dates: • Elections 11/12 @ noon • Retreat in February (think February 2nd, a Saturday) • Complete transition March 1, 2013
