Tonight’s agenda • Welcome and Introductions (5 minutes) • Background of the Forum (15 minutes) • Discussion and Final approval of goals, structure (15 minutes) • Workforce competency presentation and discussion (45 minutes) • Guest speaker: W. Andrew Faucett, MS, CGC • Director, Genomics and Public Health Program Emory University School of Medicine • Committee/ Action Group sign-up and discussions (40 minutes)

  6. What do Forums do? • Work on a specific issue that is: • important to public health • crosses disciplinary and section or SPIG boundaries • requires expertise that may reside in more than one section or SPIG, and • supports APHA's mission.

APHA Genomics Forum • Draft Goals (See handout) • Represent the public health community including APHA Components and State Affiliates, the public health workforce, and others interested in public health (government, community, advocacy, academia, healthcare, business, and the media). • Work within APHA Sections, SPIGs, Caucuses, and State Affiliates to promote workforce competency in genomics, including an improved understanding of the relevance and impact of genomics on public health. • Engage public health and health care communities and others in projects and activities that increase the awareness, knowledge, and skills of genetic services as these services relate to: • The ethical, legal, and social issues surrounding genetics/ genomics/ epigenetics; • The relationships and relevance of genomics to public health, health care, and health disparities; • Professional and public education; and • Other areas as generated by Forum members. • Guide policy by proposing updates to existing APHA policies on genetics, genomics, and epigenetics, and creating new position statements and opportunities for advocacy. • Create opportunities for networking.
