How to Succeed as a Pharmacy Student The “Feature Presentation” of this meeting
How to Begin? • Look at and evaluate how you are doing now • A month into the semester – how’s it going? • What is working? What is definitely not working? • Set goals based on your evaluation • Make one or two for all areas of your life • Determine how to reach those goals • What steps do you need to take to succeed?
First Up: Organize Your Time • Start by organizing all those “to-dos” • Find a way to track them – Outlook, paper calendar, phone (whatever you will check daily) • Put in everything that must be done – assignments, exams, appointments, meetings, studying • Then look at your “free” time • This is where the good stuff happens!
First Up: Organize Your Time • “Free” time • This is YOUR time – make sure you do something you enjoy • Find time to eat healthy, exercise, and sleep well • Yes, we sound like your mother • Yes, we mean it • A student pharmacist who makes time for themselves as well as every other demand on their time = one happy successful person
Next Up: Make the Most of Your Time • Focus while in class – actually, start by attending class • Use small gaps in your schedule (i.e. that hour in between classes) to work on quick assignments, meet with group members, address organizational issues/assignments, review class notes
Next Up: Make the Most of Your Time • Big blocks of time = big tasks • School-related tasks and regular-life tasks • School – make a plan for those blocks. What/where/how to study? Then repeat, repeat, repeat. • Plan time to shop for groceries, do your laundry, clean your living space.
Next Up: Make the Most of Your Time • Make use of the “weird” times • Download lectures and listen to them while exercising • Or print out notes and study (not recommended when running on the treadmill – gives you a headache) • Force people/animals to listen to you as you review • Think of it as quality time with loved ones • PS – dogs make the best students (those are pharmacology notes Daisy is studying)
Another Thing: Get a Support System • It takes a village to graduate a pharmacy student • Find a good group of friends and split up the task of making the study materials • Everyone loves a good study guide – one person takes one class, another a different class, etc. and then you swap • Quiz each other when walking to class, eating lunch, etc. • Let them know when you’re falling behind or you need some help • They care about you, they want to know what is going on, and they want you to succeed • Return the favor when they need your help
Another Thing: Get a Support System • Take advantage of help people offer: • Professors • Academic advisors • Academic counselors • Rho Chi tutors • Family members who will feed you (hey it’s not just about academic help)
Finally: Realize You Have Other Identities Outside of “Student” • Yes, pharmacy school IS your top priority but you’re also a: • Family member • Friend • Intern • Leader • But most importantly …
Finally: Realize You Have Other Identities Outside of “Student” • You’re HUMAN. • That means nothing will go right 100% of the time • Sometimes you’ll have a bad day/week, sometimes you’ll get a bad grade, sometimes life will just stink • So what do you do? • Be proud of who you are, what you are doing, what you have accomplished so far, and keep moving forward. Things will get better.
Last thing: “You is Kind. You is Smart. You is Important.” – The Help
