  2. Aims of the lesson By the end of this lesson you will • Understand what America was like in 1919 • Understand the appeal of the USA to immigrants in 1919 • Describe the features of the American political system • Evaluate the effects of WW1 on the American political system

The USA in 1919 • The most powerful and richest nation • Many people had immigrated from Europe over the last 100 years – over 40 million • “The land of opportunity” • Joined the Great War in 1917 and played a vital part in defeating Germany • USA had made a lot of money out of war selling arms and supplies

  4. Wilson and the League of Nations • President of the USA in 1919 was Woodrow Wilson – a Democrat • Wanted to set of a League of Nations in order to avoid future wars • Many Americans and his Republican enemies did not want to be involved in Europe

  5. American politics Democratic Party • Similar to the Labour party • Believed that America should be active in world politics • Republican Party • Similar to the Conservative Party • Believed that America should keep out of world affairs

  6. The President • The most powerful man in the USA and the world • Elected every four years • Has executive power in the USA • Must sign every law • Chooses the government and cabinet of the USA • Can only be removed by impreachment

  7. Congress • USAs parliament is called congress – both houses must pass all laws • Senate – upper house. 104 members – 2 from each state. Elected for 6 years • House of Representatives – lower house. 435 members – constituencies based on population. Elected for two years
