  3. Jefferson’s Democratic Style • Democratic: • Ensuring that all people have the same rights. • Each citizen should play a part in a democracy. • He called for an end to the political disputes of the past few years. • “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.”

  4. A Smaller Role for the Federal Government… • Change Federalist Policies: • National Government too large and too powerful. • New Economic Policies: • Reduce the Federal Budget. • Help keep Fed Debt Low. • Sec of Treasury: Albert Gallatin achieved that. • Reduced Gov. Spending.

  5. Laissez Faire… • LF: “Let Alone. • Adam Smith • Scottish Economist. • Wrote: “Wealth of Nations” • Free Market: • Goods and Services are exchanged with little regulation. • Free Competition

  6. A Less Active Government… • Gov. should protect the rights of the citizens. • Decreased size of Gov. Departments. • Cut Federal Budget. • Reduced size of Army/Navy. • Repealed the Whiskey Tax. • Sedition Act: expired • Pardoned those in Jail. • Re-establish 5 yr. rule to become a citizen.

  7. Federalist Policies Remain… • Bank of the United States. • Fed Gov. continued to pay off State Debts. • Many Federalist kept their government jobs.

The Judiciary Acts • 1789: Created a National courts system with three circuit courts and thirteen district courts, all headed by the Supreme Court. • 1801: Decreased the number of Supreme Court justices and increased the number of federal judges. • Midnight Judges: • Adams trying to limit Jefferson’s opportunity to appoint judges to the Supreme Court. • John Marshall Chief Justice.

  9. Marbury v. Madison • William Marbury was appointed justice of the peace for the District of Columbia by Adams before left office. • Sectary of State Madison under orders of Jefferson never delivered the official papers giving Marbury his authority. • Marbury sued Madison. • Under Judicial Review: Marshal ruled against Marbury.

  10. An Important Precedent. • Supreme Court ruled against Marbury. • Judiciary Act was unconstitutional. • Judicial Review: • gave the Supreme Court the power to decide whether laws passed by Congress were constitutional and to reject laws that it considered to be unconstitutional,

Madison Case? • What is the idea behind Laissez Faire? • Sec of the Treasury: He helped Jefferson reduce the Federal Budget. • Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The case set the power of judicial review, strengthen the power of the supreme court. • “Let Alone” : Free markets and competition would benefit everyone not just the wealthy.
