  3. Spark #4Advantages / Disadvantages North South Advantages Disadvantages • Advantages • Disadvantages --Looking at these Advantages and Disadvantages, for which side would you choose to be a soldier at the outbreak of the Civil War?? Why?? ***Use p. 158-9 as a resource!!

  4. Advantages/Disadvantages • North • 1. 2x as much railroad-transport troops and weapons • 2. 2/3 the pop. of the country • 3. Functioning government • 4. Well balanced economy-2x as many factories and farms • 5. Army, Navy • South • 1. Well trained officers-the best military schools –better leadership • 2. Slaves for production • 3. Unifying cause- “their way of life” • 4. morale • 5. Defensive war

  5. Lincoln Inaugural Address: • March 3, 1861 • What has already taken place?? • Secession of 7 states beginning w/ S.C. • Fort Sumter is brewing, Lincoln must decide what to do…

  11. Spark #5 • 1. Write down the option you think Lincoln chose in terms of Ft. Sumter. • Resupply but NO troops! • 2. Why do you think many Civil War battles have at least 2 names? • i.e.- the first major land battle of the Civil War is called both “First Battle of Bull Run,” and, “First Manassas?” • Yankees one name, Rebels another-based on what “impressed them about the place” • 3. Look at the maps on p. 161 &162. In what 2 areas of the country are the first major battles of the Civil War? Why would battles take place in those areas? • West (Mississippi River), and East (Richmond/D.C.)

  12. Lincoln’s choice April 6 1861 Lincoln sends food and supplies-but no troops- to Fort Sumter April 10 1861- Before supplies arrive Jefferson Davis orders Fort to surrender-they do not surrender-and the Civil War begins Day after Lincoln calls for troops to volunteer 3 months!! Sumter outcome?

What honorable manhood does he refer to? • Seeing his sons grow up

  20. Set up paper like so… Info needed for each battle: 1. Major generals on both sides 2. Key strategies for each 3. # of soldiers involved (both sides) 4. Distinguishing characteristics 5. Casualty counts (if given)

Who has upper hand at first? What/who turns the tide? • What nickname does he receive? • 4. What “sound” was first heard that day?
