  2. Classic case of Verbal Irony • He says one thing while meaning another. • He had promised that he wouldn’t say anything bad about the conspirators. “Brutus is an Honorable man – They are all Honorable men.” • “Honorable” repeated 10 times all together. Why? *

  3. Ambitious????? • Was Caesar Ambitious? • Three reasons why he wasn’t. • 1. Caesar brought many captives home to Rome and filled the treasury. • 2. When poor people cried he wept. • 3. Three times he refused the crown. *

  4. Ambitious????? • “Yet Brutus says Caesar was ambitious and Brutus is an honorable man.” • This almost exact phrase is repeated Three Times. • What is he trying to say by repeating the word “honorable”?

  5. Playing the crowd • Antony gets upset and cries. Or does he pretend to cry! • Antony uses three things to get the crowd excited. • 1. Mentions the will of Caesar - The crowd yells “Read it”. He holds off to keep them interested.

  6. Playing the crowd • 2. Antony uses Caesar’s Mantle or Cloak. • Points out where conspirators stabbed. • Points out how blood followed where Brutus’s stabbed. (How did he know?) • “For Brutus was Caesar’s angel.” • 3. Shows Caesar’s body to rile up crowd.

  7. Comparison • He compares his speaking ability to Brutus’. He claims that he is not a great speaker like Brutus. • I am no orator (speaker), as Brutus is. • I am not able to stir men’s blood, but Brutus can. • Why does he do this?

  8. READS THE WILL • He then reads the will. • He appeals to their need for money and points out Caesar’s generosity. He loved them so much. • Caesar left 75 drachmas to every man. • Caesar left his private arbors and orchard (gardens) to be turned into public parks. • He had been appealing to their sense of justice throughout his speech.
