Special Language • Standard English • Speaking using correct grammar; speaking professionally • Nonstandard English • Speaking without thinking or worrying about using correct grammar; speaking with friends
Special Language: Sublanguage Sublanguage is a subsystem of established language. • Jargon – language that is used in particular groups that may not be understood by those outside that group. • Slang – language that consists of new words, made from old words, but used outrageously. Most of it dies out, while others become standard. • Dialect – language used in a specific region or culture that differs from standard English.
