  1. 12 October, 1492 Dearest Family, Oh my gosh! This is the longest trip ever! I am sailing on the Santa Maria. Christopher Columbus is being a total jerk and I am covered in sun burns. When we saw the island, the boat almost tipped! Before we reached land people were thinking of jumping off the ship and drowning ! But nobody did. We got to land. The island is called Guanahani. There are people with metal earrings and nose rings. There are a lot of green things like trees and grass and birds and plants and stuff like that. We traded with the people living here. They came in little boats up to our ship. They traded us spears, cotton ball s, threads, and parrots. We gave them in exchange, little glass beads and hawks’ bells. Some of the people were really dumb, and they could not understand our language. Someone grabbed a sword by the blade because he did not know what it was. From, Jack
