Happy Monday! • Pre-Test • Paper Work Returned? • Syllabus Signed? • Current Events/Daily Journal • Chapter 1 Vocabulary (Work w/Neighbors and Textbook) • Let’s get the class rolling…..test material starts today
What is Geography? • No! It’s more than maps and places • Geography is the study of the Earth, its features, the people, plants and animals and the interaction between them
Today’s Objective(s) • I can identify and use the map elements (map title, compass rose, scale, and legend, date, and author) to interpret data on a given map? • I can use a compass rose to determine cardinal and intermediate directions on a map?
Latitude lines are? • Circle the earth parallel to the Equator • Also called parallels • Measure degrees north or south of Equator
3 Important lines of latitude • Tropic of Cancer 23.5˚N • Equator 0˚ • Tropic of Capricorn 23.5˚S
Lines of Longitude are? • Lines that run from the poles (North/South) • Also called Meridians • Used to measure distance east and west
Important Longitudes • The Prime Meridian (0˚ longitude) • Runs through Greenwich, England
Hemispheres are? • The half sides of the globe • Can Run either N/S or E/W • Typically split at the Equator or the Prime Meridian
aerial photography • the taking of photographs from above with a camera mounted on an aircraft, balloon, rocket, kite, skydiver or similar vehicle.
Atlas • An atlas is a collection of maps • It often shows geographic features and political boundaries, many often feature geopolitical, social, religious and economic statistics
Axis An imaginary line around which an object spins The earth spins on its axis
Bar graphs A graph in the form of boxes of different heights, with each box representing a different amount or quantity.
Cardinal directions • The points identified as North, South, East, and West on a map (N,S,E,W) • A Compass Rose shows these directions on a map.
Cartographer • A person who makes a map or chart
Distortion A misrepresentation of the truth All maps are subject to some form of distortion
Legend A key to the symbols and color codes on a map, chart, etc.
International Date Line An imaginary line on the Earth's surface at 180° longitude, mostly through the Pacific Ocean, to the east of which the calendar date is one day earlier than to the west.
Time zones A range of longitudes where a common standard time is used.
Map Scale • The ratio of distance on a map to “real” distance on the ground. • Example: This map uses a scale of 1:10.
Grid • A rectangular array of squares or rectangles of equal size • A Grid System can be used to track hurricanes
Globe • Any spherical object • The Earth is a globe
Rotation • the act of turning around a center or an axis
Satellite image • A picture taken from a satellite in space • Aerial photography?
Bell Ringer • Chapter 2 Vocabulary • Parts “A” and “B” only! You have 10 minutes!
Today’s Objective(s) • I can identify various types of maps and their uses?
Map Types • General Purpose – show a wide range of general information (physical and political) • Special Purpose- place an emphasis on a single idea (road maps, time zones, etc.)
Map Types • Physical Maps – show the topography or the shape of the physical features of the earth’s surface • Relief – the differences in elevation
Map Types • Physical maps use contour lines to show the differences in altitude of points shown on the map. • These lines connect all points at the same elevation on the map
Map Types • Political Map – shows boundaries between countries, states, counties, and parishes (La.) • Often shows cities and capitals
Map Types • Natural Resource Map – a special purpose map that shows guess what? A natural resource in number or quantity
Maps vs. Globes • Globe – shaped like the earth so it’s a truer representative • Maps – fold it up and bring it with you but is subject to distortion
Bell Ringer • Chapter 3 Vocabulary. A and B Only • Thursday, Friday, Monday Current Eventers? • Daily Journals at the end of class
Great Circle Route • The shortest possible distance between any two points on earth • Globes are great for showing great circle routes
