  3. The Geography of Egypt • The Nile River is the longest river in the world, at 4,100 miles long • There was yearly flooding, as in Mesopotamia • Egypt was the “gift of the Nile” • The Egyptians worshiped the Nile as a god.

  4. The Geography of Egypt • Unlike in Mesopotamia, the Nile flooded at the same time and to the same place each and every year • A couple of feet deeper or shallower, and houses were destroyed or thousands would die • The desert shielded the Egyptians from attacks

  5. Upper and Lower Egypt • Upper – to the south, higher elevation • Lower – near the delta in the north • Nile flows north, easy transport because the winds blow to the south

  6. Egypt Unites • Narmer united Upper and Lower Egypt • In Egypt, kings were gods • Egyptian pharaohs ruled as gods in their theocracy • The pharaoh was fully responsible for the well being of the kingdom

  7. Pyramids • The pyramid was built for kings after their death. • Tomb was even more important than the palace, since that was where eternity would be spent • Very heavy stones, some 15 tons, WITHOUT THE WHEEL

  8. Egyptian Culture • Polytheistic • Over 2000 gods in all! • Believed in life after death

  9. Mummies • Used mummification to preserve bodies of the elite • Mummies were placed in coffins • Tombs filled with things the deceased could use in the afterlife

  10. Life in Egyptian Society • Had a class system, slaves were on the bottom • Wrote in hieroglyphics • Wrote on papyrus • Developed a calendar, very accurate • Advanced medically, sometimes even performed surgery

  11. Invaders Control Egypt • Eventually, the power of pharaohs declined until a new set of powerful one returned • Egypt was later invaded by the Huksos from Palestine • Much later, Egypt would rise again
