Human Number Line • What is the value of your card? • Find the person in your color group that has a card valued just below yours. • Find the person in your color group that has a card valued just above yours. • Stand between those two people. • We will create a human number line! • Each group has 9 cards
Number Talk for Case Study On your own, draw a picture where you take 1/3 of 1 1/3. Hint: Start with a picture of 1 1/3.
Case Study • Read the case study • Discuss at your table: • How does the language of the problem support or inhibit student understanding?
United We Solve • Distribute the cards evenly at your table. • Each person is in charge of their own cards’ clues. • Take turns reading your clues to your group. • Use all of your clues to cooperatively solve the problem.
United We Solve Debrief • How did your group work together to solve the problem? • How did you divide the work? • Did each group member have an equitable role? • How can we set up this activity with students so that all group members are equally involved in problem-solving?

Fraction Card Sort Before beginning this task, please do the following: • With a felt pen put a red dot in the upper left hand corner of all of the “B” cards. • Put a blue dot on all of the “C” cards. • Put a yellow dot on all of the “D” cards. • Put a purple dot on all of the “E” cards. • Cut apart the cards and put into sets by color.
Fraction Card Sort • Take turns at your table to choose an expression and the area model to match it. (A & B) • Place them side by side on the table and explain how you know they match. • If you can not find a match please make the missing card on a post-it note and attach to a blank card. • When you have completed this first match, add in each additional set: C, D, E in turn.
